Our last piece on this tracked One UI 9 reaching the Galaxy S24 in Korea first. What changed since then: the update has moved down to the Galaxy S23 series. Reports dated October 19 to 21 say Samsung has started sending stable One UI 9 (Android 17) to the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra, beginning in Europe. I could not find a Samsung announcement; everything below comes from press coverage of owners and firmware trackers, so treat dates as reported.
What is reported
SammyFans, in an article published October 21, says the rollout is phased and reaches people on the One UI 9 beta first, then people on One UI 8.5. It names Europe on October 19 and India on October 21 (beta users first). The Hans India, the same day, names only Europe and cites SamMobile for the firmware: S91xBXXUAGZIF, about 516 MB. That is the size for the build it describes; neither article gives a download size for a phone coming from One UI 8.5, so expect a larger file if that is you.
Both say the update carries the October 2026 security patch. SammyFans counts 79 fixes. A separate report we saw gave 83, so the count is not settled. A headline on SammyFans also mentions the US and the Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, but I could not read that article, so I am not counting it as confirmed.
Why this looks like the last big one
The Galaxy S23 launched with Android 13 and One UI 5.1, and Samsung promised four Android upgrades. Counting from 13, Android 17 is the fourth. The Hans India reads One UI 9 as the last promised major upgrade, and notes that it does not call it final. Samsung has not published a plan for anything after it. Samsung also promised five years of security updates for the S23 series, and that promise is separate: the phone should keep getting monthly or quarterly patches after the big upgrades stop. Our October patch piece shows how that works in practice, and who gets dropped when a model leaves the roadmap.
What to do on an S23
- Open Settings, Software update, Download and install. That is the path SammyFans gives.
- If nothing is offered, that is normal for a phased rollout. Carrier-locked units usually come later than unlocked ones, and Samsung's earlier schedule already shifted twice.
- Charge the phone and free some space before you start. If you are leaving the beta, the switch is a small download.
- If the phone works well today, waiting a week or two for first bug reports is a reasonable position. Samsung has not said waiting carries a risk.
What changes for you
The hardware is the same one you have: the chip, the cameras and the battery do not change. You get Android 17 and the One UI 9 interface, and any feature that depends on newer hardware stays with newer phones. Our list of which Galaxy gets One UI 9 had no S23 date when it was written; this is the first sign of one.
The practical question for an S23 owner is what comes after this update. Without further major versions, the phone's age shows up in apps and accessories that start requiring a newer Android, which usually takes years rather than months. If your S23 still does what you need, nothing in this rollout is a reason to replace it.
If you are thinking about how long a phone stays supported, the end of Pixel 6 updates shows what a final month looks like, and what Google has and has not said about it.
