When One UI 9 reached the Galaxy S25 in the US on October 3, the S24 line had no stable date at all. That has changed in one country. Android Authority, Notebookcheck and SammyFans all reported on October 6 that stable One UI 9 (Android 17) has started on the Galaxy S24 series, the Z Fold6 and the Z Flip6 in South Korea. I could not open those three articles directly; what follows comes from search summaries of them, so check the originals before acting on a number.
What is reported
The reports put the download at roughly 500 MB for people already on the beta, and roughly 3.8 GB for a phone coming from One UI 8.5. One outlet gives the Korean firmware as ending in UGEZIF with the September 2026 security patch. I could not confirm that build string against a page I could read, so treat it as reported.
What the reports do not describe is anything outside Korea. A separate list from 9to5Google, updated October 10, marks the S24 series and the Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 as "limited availability", and says Samsung has not confirmed a schedule.
The October 12 date
SammyFans says people outside Korea should expect the stable update starting October 12. Samsung has not said that. It is one outlet's expectation, and Samsung's earlier dates already moved twice, so read October 12 as a guess about tomorrow, not a promise.
Android Authority expects other markets, including the US and Europe, to follow Korea. That is the pattern the S26 and S25 followed, but the pattern has not been announced as policy.
What the global S24 update is, today
On September 30, SamMobile reported a global S24 update for the S24, S24+, S24 Ultra and S24 FE that carries the September 2026 security patch and is explicitly not One UI 9. The international firmware ends in HDZI1 and is about 450 MB. If your S24 just offered you a small download, that is probably the one: a patch, not the new version. SamMobile said at the time that there was no information on when these phones would get stable One UI 9.
What to do on an S24 or a Z6
- Open Settings, Software update, Download and install. If One UI 9 is offered, the download will be several gigabytes, so free space and charge the battery first.
- If you only see a small patch, install it. It does not delay the big update.
- If nothing is offered, that is the normal state outside Korea right now. Checking every day does not speed it up.
Samsung is still patching the S24, as the September patch above shows, so waiting does not leave it without security fixes. For most owners of a phone that works, a week or two of waiting while the first bug reports come in is a reasonable position, and Samsung has not said it carries a risk.
For your S24: how much changes
Same as for the S25: Android 17 underneath and a different interface, on hardware that does not change. The camera, the battery and the chip are the ones you have. Anything that relies on newer hardware stays with newer phones; the list of which Galaxy gets One UI 9 still has no global date for the S24 line.
If your phone is a Pixel and you are weighing a beta instead, Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 makes the case for waiting. And for what Samsung's monthly patches do and who they skip, see the October 2026 patch.
