This continues our September piece on Google System Updates. What changed since then: Google's October release notes, first published on October 5, gained their biggest entries on October 19 and 20, and one of them is aimed at phones that did not get Android 16 or 17. The source for everything below is Google's own system update notes.
The item for older phones
Google Play services v26.41, dated October 19, lists extra in-call scam protection under security and privacy, and says it covers devices running "Android 15 and earlier". The notes describe it as protection against apps that request accessibility permissions during a call. Scammers on the phone sometimes talk people into granting those permissions to an app that then controls the screen.
The notes do not say how the protection appears, whether it blocks the request or only warns, or whether every phone maker's build shows it. Treat it as arriving through Play services, gradually, with no way to force it. If your phone still runs Android 15 or earlier, this is a protection that does not wait for a system update.
Find Hub
The v26.41 notes add Left-Behind Reminders to Find Hub, and say supported Find Hub tags can now bond automatically to their owner. Fast Pair accessories get smoother over-the-air firmware updates, and a newer Find Hub Network specification is available. The v26.39 entry from October 5 added NFC tap on a tag to show its details, and categories and renaming during tag setup.
Which tags and which accessories count as supported is not listed. If you own a tracker, check the maker's app after the update instead of assuming. There is also a removal: from v26.40 on October 12, Find Hub cannot be installed on Googlebook (Aluminium) devices and its features are removed there.
Wallet and the Play Store
Wallet picks up several changes on the phone side. Per Google's notes, v26.40 lets you scan receipts to add them, improves merchant names in transaction notifications and adds an in-app message center. It also lets Google Pay on Chrome skip the payment sheet when you have shared your name, email and phone number. The v26.41 entry adds an upgrade of a digital ID to an Aadhaar card, which is specific to India.
On the Play Store side, v53.6 (October 12) adds Ask Play, which summarizes user reviews with citations, AI summaries in Community Posts and Gemini game recommendations. Version 53.7 (October 19) puts device offers at the top of Apps Home and shows the time or data remaining on active downloads instead of a percentage. None of that changes how your phone works.
What the notes do not say
Google says new builds arrive over the following weeks, and some may reach devices in November. The notes give no per-country or per-brand schedule, so an item missing today is not evidence that your phone is excluded. Most entries state no minimum Android version, and the scam protection is the only one with a stated upper limit.
To see whether a Play system update is waiting, a Samsung phone uses Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Google Play system update, according to Sammy Fans. The menu name differs by maker, so use the settings search for "Google Play system update" if the path is not there. Play services and the Play Store themselves update in the background.
For the phone you already own
If you are on Android 15 or earlier, the scam protection is the entry that matters, and it needs nothing from you except automatic updates left on. If you are on a newer Android, almost all of October's list is Wallet, Find Hub and Play Store conveniences. If your phone is not getting the monthly security patch at all, a different piece applies: our guide on why an Android update is not showing up covers how to tell.
