iOS 27.1 is the iPhone Duo’s release. What it means for the iPhone you own

Apple added a pre-order step on October 12 and a second wave of countries on October 30. The software detail that matters more: the Duo ships with iOS 27.1, and the beta everyone is testing is 27.2.

This updates our explainer on the iPhone Duo, which already gave the pre-order and availability dates. What is new since then is small on the hardware side and more interesting on the software side. If you own an iPhone that is not the Duo, the useful part is the second half.

What changed in the dates

According to 9to5Mac's report of Apple's September 29 announcement, you can start a pre-order from Monday, October 12, choosing color, storage, carrier and payment method ahead of time. Orders themselves open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific. Apple's newsroom page for the Duo lists availability from October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, and a further 28 from October 30. If your country is not on Apple's first list, the second wave is where to look, and Apple's page is the place to check the names.

None of that is available yet. These are announced dates, not shipped product.

The software detail: it ships with iOS 27.1

Apple's page says the Duo "will be available with iOS 27.1." That is a version number nobody has seen in public. As MacRumors' beta guide shows, iOS 27.2 beta 1 came out on September 16. Heise reported on September 25 that the 27.2 beta appeared before any 27.1 beta, and that it is unclear whether 27.1 will get a public beta at all. Heise's suggestion for why is that Apple wants to avoid leaks about the Duo. That is a guess by the outlet, not something Apple has said.

Heise also says iOS 27.1 is expected on October 23, the day the Duo reaches customers. Expected is the word that matters: Apple's announcement ties 27.1 to the Duo, but I found nothing from Apple saying when 27.1 reaches other iPhones, or what it contains for them.

What that means for the iPhone you own

The honest answer is that nothing is confirmed, so here is what is known and what is not.

One practical thing follows. A first release of a point version that exists to launch new hardware is a bad moment to be an early adopter on a phone you rely on. That is general advice, not a claim about this update: when 27.1 does appear for your iPhone, waiting a few days to read what early installers report costs nothing, and there is no deadline attached to it. The same logic applies to the 27.2 beta: unless you test software for a living, a beta on your daily phone is a choice with a cost, and nothing announced so far makes it necessary.

If you are shopping for the Duo

The pre-order step on October 12 saves checkout time and nothing else; it does not reserve a unit. Apple has not published stock figures, so how hard the Duo is to get on launch day is still unknown. Whether the trade-offs listed in the explainer, such as no Face ID and no telephoto lens, suit you is a question for the person who uses the phone every day, and no date answers it.

If the Duo's cameras are what you are weighing, what the iPhone 18 Pro actually changed covers the other half of that September event. And for a different kind of foldable question, what improved across this year's foldables sets the Duo against the rest.
