Apple announced the iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. It is the company’s first foldable, and it is the first iPhone in years where the interesting question is not what got added. It is what Apple took out so the thing would close.
If you already carry an iPhone, start with the honest answer: this changes nothing about the phone in your pocket. None of it arrives as a software update. The multitasking, the second screen, the way the interface rearranges itself when you move the device — all of that is hardware behaviour that exists only on the Duo.
The two screens, by Apple’s numbers
Closed, it is a 5.4-inch outer display. Open, a 7.6-inch inner one. Both figures come from Apple. Apple also says the outer screen gives you 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, and that the two displays share an aspect ratio — which is the claim that actually matters day to day, because it means an app should not reflow into something unfamiliar every time you open the phone. Apple lists both panels with ProMotion, Always On, and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits.
The hinge, Apple says, is built from more than 100 components. The inner display has a nano-texture finish that the company credits with cutting glare and making the crease harder to see. Harder to see is not gone, and Apple does not claim otherwise.
Split View is the actual feature
Two apps side by side on an iPhone, for the first time. You can also open two windows of the same app — Safari, in Apple’s own example — and save app pairs to come back to. Apple describes iOS adapting as you move the device: content reacts as it folds, reorients when you turn it sideways, and switches to the appropriate display when you flip it over. Closed, Lock Screen controls and the Dock shift to the side to buy back vertical space. Set it down and it drops into StandBy on either screen, charging or not. The hands-on at 9to5Mac adds that it works partly folded.
What Apple removed to get here
This is the part the announcement does not lead with, and it is the part that decides whether the Duo is a phone you can live with.
- No Face ID. Apple’s own page says authentication is Touch ID, built into the side button, open or closed. If your muscle memory is most of a decade of looking at a phone to unlock it, that is a change you meet every few minutes, not a footnote.
- No dedicated telephoto. Apple lists two rear cameras, both 48MP: Main and Ultra Wide. The 2x is a crop out of the Main sensor that Apple calls optical-quality, not a third lens. If you shoot at 5x on a Pro today, this is a step down in the one place you would notice immediately.
- eSIM only, worldwide. Apple’s page lists no SIM tray in any market. Worth checking against how you actually swap carriers when you travel.
- No Action button. Apple’s page does not list one, and the MacRumors spec roundup says there is no Action button and no mute switch either.
Put together, that is a flagship that is not the Pro. It is a different trade, not a better one, and which side you land on depends on whether you open two apps more often than you reach for the long lens.
The Apple Pencil line has an asterisk
Apple’s wording is that later this year, iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C. Two things follow from that sentence. It is not there at launch, and Apple has not named a date past “later this year” — so treat it as announced, not available. And it is specifically the USB-C model: MacRumors reports the Apple Pencil Pro is not supported, which means a Pencil already in your drawer may not be the one that works.
What nobody knows yet
Apple’s battery figures are up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 on the outer, and up to 24 hours of use per charge with both screens used about equally. Those are manufacturer numbers from a controlled test. They are not a forecast of your week, and this site has no lab to check them against.
The open question on any foldable is what the hinge and the panel look like after two years of being opened and shut, and nobody can answer that on announcement day — not for the Duo, and not for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has had several more generations to work on it. Apple describes high-strength glass above and below the folding panel, with adhesives that let the layers glide past each other to relieve bend stress. That is a description of a design, not a durability result.
Apple says pre-orders open on 16 October and availability starts on 23 October in more than 70 countries, shipping with iOS 27.1. Those are announced dates; nothing has shipped yet. If the other half of that same event is what you were waiting for, the iPhone 18 Pro is where the camera story went.
The Duo is a first-generation product from the company that waited longest to make one, and that cuts both ways: the chance to skip mistakes other makers already made, and no track record to check it against. If you want the shape of the year instead of one device, what actually improved in foldables during 2026 is the wider view, and Huawei’s trifold is what the category looks like when a maker pushes the format further.
