Windows 11 October update: the AC-3 crash is fixed, the USB audio problem is still open

Microsoft marked the AC-3 problem as resolved on October 13. The USB Audio Class 1.0 problem still has no fix, and the backup bug rests on one outlet.

Microsoft's release health page for Windows 11 26H2 was updated on October 13, 2026, and it now lists the AC-3 problem as resolved. The earlier piece on Windows 11 audio problems that were still open described apps that close unexpectedly when they need Windows to decode AC-3 (Dolby Digital) sound. Microsoft says the October 13 update, KB5127648, fixes it. The USB audio problem from that same piece is not fixed.

What changed since the earlier piece

When that piece went up, the AC-3 entry was marked "Confirmed" and promised a fix in a future update, with no date. The entry now reads "Resolved", and the resolution text says the issue was fixed by "Windows updates released October 13, 2026 (KB5127648), and updates released after that date". The affected versions it lists are 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2. Microsoft recommends installing the latest security update, and the entry gives no workaround for a PC that stays on the older one.

Whether it matters to you

Microsoft's own description is narrow. The component is mostly used by legacy applications that rely on Windows' built-in audio decoding, and many modern apps bring their own decoder and never hit the problem. If no app on your PC started closing after the September 22 update, there is nothing to do here beyond installing the update the way you normally would.

If one did, the documented fix is the October update. To see whether it is installed, open Settings, Windows Update, Update history and look for KB5127648. Microsoft's entry does not describe a way to confirm an individual app is fixed, so the check is to do again whatever used to make it close.

What is still open

The USB Audio Class 1.0 entry, the Code 10 error in Device Manager and silent headsets or DACs, is still marked "Mitigated", with its last update on September 29. It says Microsoft is working on a fix in a future update and gives no date. Nothing on the page ties KB5127648 to it, so do not read the AC-3 fix as covering it. For a home PC there is still no step on that page to follow.

Two entries are new this week. A black screen after sign-in, seen mainly on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts that use FSLogix, is also listed as resolved by KB5127648. Remote Desktop connections that fail with error 0xC000000D for non-admin users are marked "Mitigated", and Microsoft describes them as mostly affecting managed machines that have Administrator protection turned on. Neither is likely to describe a PC at home.

The backup bug and the 24H2 deadline

The File History bug from September does not appear in the entries on the 26H2 page. Windows Latest reports that the October update fixes it and that its author saw backups working again. That is one outlet's test, and Microsoft's page does not confirm it. If you depend on File History, the earlier piece on the backup bug explains how to check with a real restore.

KB5127648 is also the last security update for Windows 11 24H2 on Home and Pro, as covered in the piece on the 24H2 end date. A 24H2 PC gets the AC-3 fix and then stops receiving updates, so the version question matters more than the audio one.

If the October update will not install, what to try when Windows Update is stuck or failing goes through it in order.
