Sonos began rolling out Sonos 27, the newest version of its speaker software, on September 8, 2026, as a free update. According to Sonos's own announcement, it reaches "all Sonos S2 products" — meaning any Sonos speaker still supported by the current app, not just this year's models. Two new pieces of hardware built around it, the Beam Ultra soundbar and the Ace Ultra headphones, become generally available September 29. That's the part worth separating out before anything else: the software update is broad, but several of its headline features are not.
What every S2 speaker gets
The app itself changed shape. Sonos rebuilt navigation around three tabs — Home, System and Search — added native swipe gestures and room pinning, and replaced the old per-room volume sliders with what the company calls a universal volume gesture that works the same way no matter which room you're adjusting. None of that requires new speakers; it's the interface layered on top of hardware you may have owned for years, and it applies the moment you update the app, not just the moment you buy something new.
The features that need specific speakers
Two of Sonos 27's bigger tricks are gated by hardware you'd need to already have, or buy. Portable Surrounds lets a Move 2 or Sonos Play speaker pair up wirelessly with a compatible soundbar — Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam Ultra or Beam Gen 2 — and act as a rear surround channel for roughly as long as you want, then unpair and go back to being a standalone speaker in about eight seconds, per Sonos. If you own a Move 2 but not one of those four soundbars, or one of those soundbars but not a Move 2 or Play, the feature exists in the software update you just installed and does nothing for your setup. Headphone Linking is narrower still: it connects the Ace Ultra headphones directly to a Sonos system over Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, and as of this week it works with exactly one pair of headphones — the Ace Ultra, launching in Early Access alongside general availability on September 29. Existing Sonos Ace owners don't get it.
The AI layer, and what's actually live
Sonos 27 also introduces two AI features under different names. Sonos 27mcp lets outside AI assistants — Sonos names ChatGPT specifically — control playback through the Model Context Protocol, and Sonos says it's in Early Access starting September 8. Sonos 27voice, the company's own natural-language assistant for building playlists and setting a mood by description rather than search, is the one to treat as not yet a real feature to plan around: Sonos's own material describes it without committing to a date beyond "this fall." A third piece, Custom Agents — letting you summon different AI personalities by name — is a preview, not a shipped feature at all. If you were expecting to talk to your speakers the way Sonos demoed at launch, most of what makes that possible isn't turned on yet, even on speakers that got the September 8 update.
What to actually check
If your Sonos gear is old enough to have been sitting on the S1 app rather than S2, none of this reaches you — Sonos 27 replaces the S2 app, and speakers that were already left behind by that earlier split stay behind here too. If you're on S2, updating the app gets you the redesigned navigation and volume controls automatically; whether you get Portable Surrounds or Headphone Linking depends entirely on which specific speakers are already on your shelf, not on whether you updated.
Sonos's update lands in the same month Pixel phones picked up a lock screen bug and Windows 11 quietly broke its own backup tool — worth noting only because this one is a feature rollout Sonos chose the timing of, not a patch rushed out to fix something that broke. Whether the AI layer turns out to be worth having is a question for when Sonos 27voice actually ships this fall, not now.
